REGENERATING THE SUBURBS : HOW DO YOU TURN A DISCUSSION INTO A LABORATORY?

How do you transform a political debate into a laboratory of ideas? This is the question Benedetto Camerana will address on July 2nd at the “Designing Security” meeting, dedicated to discussing the degradation and regeneration of the suburbs. Organized by ORA!, the meeting will focus on Northern Turin, a complex area marked by social and urban fragility and often a site of intense political conflict. In a debate that easily risks being reduced to political conflict, Camerana’s contribution will seek to shift perspective, focusing on planning tools that can truly improve the quality of life and integration in the most vulnerable neighborhoods.

GO-FIT EX MERCATO FIORI TORINO

On 21 October 2025, the first GO Fit Italia sports center opened to the public, located inside the former Mercato dei Fiori in Turin. The architectural project, designed by Benedetto Camerana Studio, transforms a major historic structure into a contemporary hub dedicated to health, sports, and family well-being, contributing significantly to the urban regeneration of the city. This is the first sports center built in Italy by the Madrid-based group—an intervention of strategic importance for the transformation of Turin’s northern district. Pools, gyms, studios for classes, relaxation areas, and new public outdoor spaces redefine the relationship between the building and the neighborhood, creating an innovative and inclusive offer for the community.

THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF GO-FIT SPORTS CENTER, THE FIRST IN ITALY, IS COMMENCING AT EX MERCATO DEI FIORI SITE IN TURIN

The Ex Mercato dei Fiori in Via Perugia will become the first Go-Fit sports center in Italy. Benedetto Camerana is overseeing the sustainable transformation and enhancement project of the building and the surrounding areas of the Aurora neighborhood, particularly the parking lot on Corso Brescia, which is being transformed into a public square with a garden. For the Ex Mercato dei Fiori complex, the project defines a recovery of the structures and facades that characterize this historic public building. In recent months, a selective demolition phase of the building parts to be reconstructed has taken place.
