Olympic Village, service area
The transformation of the rationalist structures of the Moi, built in 1933, chooses to enhance the architecture of Umberto Cuzzi. The most significant transformations concern the closure of the volumes of the canopies with windows and the opening of the space of the former general markets towards the city, overturning an originally introverted system. The five central arches of each block are closed with large arched windows, moving back on the second axis and thus creating a system of arcades that allows the carrying out of logistic and transport functions. Selective recovery restores the best architectures by demolishing those of little value or useless. The integrations are made with new materials: metal, glass, wood, quite distinct from the historical ones. The recovery of the structures is aimed at enhancing the original cement, with punctual micro interventions of recovery, brushing, and a light semi-transparent protective varnish. The only concession to contemporary technology: the so-called “pleated window”, a self-supporting structure inspired by the idea of origami , which allowed the bold reinforced concrete structure of the central roof to be kept autonomous and in evidence.
