LINE 2 and THE FIRST LINE: AT THE FOREFRONT OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

LINE 2 and THE FIRST LINE
Line 2 of the Turin metro is an opportunity to create something lasting. It is an infrastructure project that will not only transform mobility, but also everyday life and the relationships between the places it connects. The first section will run from Rebaudengo station to Torino Porta Nuova railway station, passing through Barriera di Milano and the area of the Corso Novara cemetery, before descending toward the city center.
The project will be developed in two phases. Infra. To, the company managing this €1.3 billion contract in Turin, launched an international competition to define the entire system of the first section of Line 2 — from the architecture of the stations to the visual identity and signage, from structural design to communication.
Among the participants was Benedetto Camerana Studio, with a comprehensive proposal that was not selected as the winner. However, it was an opportunity to measure ourselves against some of the most important names in contemporary architecture worldwide, including Zaha Hadid Architects, Kengo Kuma, Massimiliano Fuksas, Mario Cucinella, and Carlo Ratti. The articles reporting the news mentioned the studio among the international protagonists competing in the process. The competition was won by the Dutch firm UNStudio (U.N. Studio B.V. – Van Berkel Architect), with a project inspired by the harmony of Turin’s porticoes.
Although we were not selected in this first phase, Benedetto Camerana will continue to reflect and propose ideas for the next stage. Contributing to a project that will reshape the city’s circulation and imagination remains, for us, both a responsibility and an objective.
