GO FIT – Ex-Flower Market
The architectural project, designed by Benedetto Camerana Studio, transforms the former Flower Market building into a new sports centre with dedicated parking facilities. It is the first sports centre developed in Italy by the Madrid-based group and represents a strategic intervention for the regeneration of northern Turin.
The project converts a large historic building into a contemporary hub dedicated to health, sport and family wellbeing. A private car park and technical rooms are located on the underground level, while the sports centre itself develops on the ground floor, with swimming pools, gyms, course rooms, a hydrotherapy and SPA area, changing rooms, a café, a playroom and service spaces.
Particular attention was given to the treatment of the façades, with large glazed openings inserted within the rhythm of the existing pillars and a new contemporary volume marking the entrance and main lobby. Although the building is not subject to heritage restrictions, it holds significant value for the local community; for this reason, the project enhances its memory, roof structure and original architectural character, integrating them with new efficient and flexible functions.
The internal layout is designed to ensure clear circulation and avoid interference between users, staff and activities. From the lobby, access through badge-controlled turnstiles leads to the changing rooms and then to the different functional areas: the wet route connects to the swimming pools and SPA, while the dry route leads to the fitness room and studios. The café and playroom expand the centre’s offer, making it an inclusive and accessible place for families.
The external works, carried out as a public intervention at the expense of the developer, redefine the relationship between the building and the neighbourhood. The project’s attention to the relationship between architecture, outdoor spaces and the city focused in particular on the front area, previously used as a public car park and now fully reimagined and regenerated with the aim of returning to the city a greener, more accessible and more sustainable public space. The tree-lined green strips provide shade, mitigate overheating and improve environmental quality. In addition, since the area is subject to river flood risk, the project integrates a hydraulic system to collect and reuse rainwater for the irrigation of green areas and for toilet flushing, reducing consumption and waste.
